The American Heart Association published a list Wednesday of seven simple things people over age 50 can do to extend their life as long as 40 more years.
What’s on the list? A bunch of things you might expect: no smoking, keeping a lean physique, exercising multiple times a week, eating healthy, and keeping cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure in check.
All of those things, research shows, can dramatically reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, two of the most common causes of death.
The group is also publishing an online quiz for people to take to determine how close they are to the ideal. A recent survey by the heart association found that 39 percent of Americans thought they had ideal heart health while 54 percent had been told they had room for improvement.

Celebrity forums are abuzz today with the news that Real Housewives of New York City star Kelly Bensimon will pose nude for the March issue of Playboy magazine.
A spokesman for Playboy confirmed rumors today, which have been circulating for months, that the 42-year-old New York socialite will appear in that month’s issue. According to the spokesman, Bensimon’s image will appear on the magazine’s cover and in a six-page pictorial.
A fashion model who has appeared in magazines like ELLE and Cosmopolitan, Bensimon’s nude pics were taken by her former husband, renowned fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon.

Legendary Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper, who is undergoing intensive treatment for prostate cancer, has reportedly sought a divorce from his fifth wife.
The 73-year-old actor, who is perhaps best known for his role in the 1969 biker film Easy Rider, cited “irreconcilable differences” in a divorce petition against his wife of 14 years, Victoria Duffy.
“I wish Victoria the best, but only want to spend these difficult days surrounded by my children and close friends,” Hopper said in a statement.
Hopper and Duffy have a 6-year-old daughter. More...

Consumer Reports has a story out today about the biggest scams of 2009. Some of them are pretty interesting – what’s most interesting is that many of them were boldly apparent online and elsewhere as people looked for ways to make quick cash.
The article notes that a lot of the ’09 scams seemed to target people affected by the down economy – some promised people new jobs, others offered money from the government stimulus, etc.
Even now, it’s not difficult to find examples of some of these scams on the internet: mystery shoppers, Google/Twitter from home, foreign lottery scams (a classic).
Certainly there are many that are not mentioned in this list. You hear a lot about Russian bride scams as well as various scams targeting the elderly.
Take a look and see if there are any you may have fallen victim to.

Who knew pole-dancing is such a dangerous sport? Actress Teri Hatcher evidently didn’t know that. The Desperate Housewives star recently revealed that she broke a rib while filming a pole-dancing scene for the hit NBC drama.
Hatcher was reportedly in the midst of a sexy dance move that required her to flip upside down while hanging onto the pole when her rib cracked.
Despite the injury, Hatcher had to continue stripping through multiple takes. What’s worse? She performed the spectacle in front of 20 complete strangers as the cameras rolled. More...

Before she was a politician, Sarah Palin was a TV news anchor. And now, she is back to her old digs.
The former governor of Alaska and one-time Republican vice presidential nominee signed a deal yesterday to join the Fox News Channel as a commentator and political analyst. The deal also says Palin will host episodes of Fox’s “Real American Stories” series, which features inspirational tales about Americans.
Adored by America’s right wing and reviled by those on the left, Palin has been a polarizing political figure ever since her failed vice presidential run with Ariz. Senator John McCain in 2008. In 2009, she stepped down 17 months early from her position as governor and late released a best-selling book titled “Going Rogue.”
News of her deal with Fox has reignited speculation about what her political future might hold, if anything. She is widely considered to be a possible contender to run against U.S. President Barack Obama in 2012.

The world's tallest bulding just opened in Dubai. The Burj Dubai stands at a record height of 2,717 feet (828 m) and took three years to construct. What better way to celebrate the opening of such a structure than to jump off the top of it? Two crazed men did just that, cheating death and setting a world record in base jumping. Watch this fotage from the lunatics' historic jump.

A team of Australian explorers on New Year’s Day came across the remains of an airplane that was abandoned in an expedition to Antarctica in 1911.
The team, which was visiting Antarctica to perform a large-scale drilling operation, happened upon the remains of the plane, which have been frozen in ice for nearly 100 years.
In an attempt to make history as the first person to fly across Antarctica, Australian Explorer Douglas Mawson flew the craft to the Antarctic ice cap in 1911, but the plane’s engine stalled in the cold. The plane was a British aircraft that was among the first airplanes ever produced. Mawson abandoned it at Cape Denison.More...

By now, you have surely heard of the untimely death of actress Brittany Murphy. While there is no official word yet on the exact cause of her death, one can only speculate that it was somehow related to drugs, considering her age and apparent good health.
In any case, it's best to remember the young actress for who she was. TheGeneral prefers to remember her for what, in his opinion, was her greatest role - as the voice of Luanne Platter on Fox's "King of the Hill."
Here is a clip of what was apparently her last interview as she attended a movie premiere Dec. 1.
