Today is Go Red for Women Day. It is a day set aside each year by the American Heart Association to bring awareness to heart health issues in women. Go Red for Women is a movement that celebrates the power of women to wipe out heart disease and stroke.
Heart disease is viewed as something that affects older men, not women, but it claims the lives of 500,000 women each year. This fact was something most women were unaware of. Go Red for Women was created to make women aware of it being the number one killer among women.
The movement challenges women to reduce the risk of heart disease and give them tools to live a heart healthier life. The American Heart Association set a goal to improve cardio vascular health in all Americans by 20% and to reduce the number of deaths by 20% all by the year 2020.
The symbol of the red dress was adopted by the AHA and other organizations committed to improving the heart health of women. These groups working together get the message out to more women than one organization could alone.
To observe the day woman and man who support the cause are encouraged to wear red clothing, tying the cause and symbol together.
