Chocolate is actually good for you, really good for you.  You might even call it the new super fruit. At least that’s what the researchers at Hershey’s Center for Health and Nutrition say.

So is it a marketing ploy to sell more chocolate.  Maybe, but we will let you decide.

A team of researchers claims to have found more evidence of chocolate’s powerful antioxidant benefits.They compared levels of polyphenols and flavanols in fruit powder to those in cocoa powder. They found more the cocoa powder, “gram for gram,” they said.

“Cacao seeds are a “Super Fruit” providing nutritive value beyond that of their macronutrient composition,” states Debra Miller, author of the paper.

The study was funded by the chocolate giant, Hershey.  It also found that dark chocolate and cocoa powder had more polyphenols and flavanols as well as greater antioxidant capabilities then the fruit powders did, according to the authors.

Antioxidants fight cell damaging free radicals. Those are tied to a host of health issues, taking a toll as we age.  Foods such as grapes, pomegranates and dark chocolate all contain beneficial antioxidants.

A more neutral expert doesn’t think the researchers have really discovered anything.

“Think, marketing,” says NYU professor and nutruition guru Marion Nestle (not associated with the other chocolate giant) “There’s no such thing as a super fruit. And the last time I looked, chocolate was still candy.”
