Shoppers may want to avoid New York’s Fifth Avenue or Paris’ Avenue des Champs-Elysées. According to Presence Mystery Shopping, poor customer service and dismal atmospheres make the prestigious districts some of the world’s worst places to shop.
"The level of welcome was not up to the standard you'd expect from an avenue as visited and as beautiful as the Champs-Elysées,” said a spokeswoman for the Paris-based Presence Mystery Shopping.
To determine the rankings, shoppers visited nearly 400 retail outlets in 30 districts around the world and anonymously ranked them using such criteria as location, presentation, customer service, atmosphere and style.
Paris’ Champs-Elysées ranked 16th on Presence’s list of 30 shopping districts, while Fifth Avenue placed 26th. The absolute worst places to shop, according to the list, are Avenida de la Libertad, Lisbon; Rue du Rhône, Geneva; Des Voeux Road, Central, Hong Kong; and Linking Road, Bandra, Mumbai.
So where are the best places to shop till you drop? Global mystery shoppers ranked Singapore's Orchard Road as the best place to drop some cash, while Luxembourg's Avenue de la Liberté came in second. Third place went to the P.C. Hooftstraat, one of Amsterdam's most expensive shopping districts. Istanbul’s Bagdat Avenue and Sao Paulo’s Oscar Freire also ranked in the top five.
